Walking Billboards: A Smart and Effective Way To Market Your Business

An old cliché pertaining to success in business has long been “Getting ahead is all about who you know”.

While that may remain true in some circles, most of us have realized that it's not about who you know but 'who knows you' that determines whether a business will be a success or failure.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics: about 20% of small businesses fail in their first year and about 50% fail by their fifth year. One of the main reasons for businesses failing is due to marketing mistakes. It's no secret that marketing is crucial for a business' survival and growth so missing out on ways to reach your target audience can come back to haunt you.

Historically, businesses had relied on visual and media marketing to get their names out in the public: billboards, radio and television ads are something we come across every day. But how effective are they when you consider the cost?

Billboards in Portland, Oregon, can range from $6,300.00 to $16,000.00 per month depending on what type of billboard is used and where it's located. While studies have shown that billboards can be effective for informing people about an upcoming event, concert or play, they're not likely to raise as much awareness about a business-and that's even if the people driving by them at 60-70mph even look up and see them within the few seconds they're visible.

Radio and television ad prices can start in the tens of thousands of dollars for a 30 second bite. While they used to be effective years ago, with commercial free radio and television, they aren't near as effective and heard or seen by fewer people every year.

Even when people do listen to radio stations, it's normal for them to flip to another preset radio station as soon as the commercial break starts. Even television has been affected by the introduction of TiVo and other devices. Think about it: when was the last time you sat through a television commercial?

As time goes on, it's become apparent that old marketing methods are quickly losing their effectiveness in returning your marketing dollars to you.

So how can you market and do so without breaking your budget? One popular way is by using screen printed garments as an advertising avenue.

Everyone enjoys wearing shirts, hoodies and jackets with a screen printed design on them. Anywhere you go, the chances are good that you'll see someone wearing a screen printed piece of clothing. And what normally happens when you see a shirt with a design on it? You look at it! It's almost instinctual for people to look and see what a design is when they notice it on someone's shirt or other piece of clothing.

Add your business name to an eye-catching design or logo and you can have potentially thousands of people gaining awareness of your business or brand.

Imagine if you gave printed shirts to your employees as a gift or reward for excellent work. Those employees will end up wearing that shirt, emblazoned with your name and logo, when they go to the store, the mall, concerts, dinners and other public events. How many people do you think will see and gain exposure to your business name and brand?

Now imagine if you provided all of your employees these shirts. In essence, you'd have an army of “walking billboards” exposing everyone around them to your business at a fraction of the cost that would otherwise be spent on billboards or other forms of advertisements.

Next time you're thinking of how you can better market your business or brand, while achieving a great return on investment, remember that screen printed clothing, that will provide you with a number of walking billboards, is a smart and effective way to go.
